Dear Parents/Carers,
At Weddington, we are introducing a new scheme called Spelling Shed, to help the children learn spellings in school and at home.
Teachers will show the children how they will log in (from home) and practise their spellings. However, there are more details for parents/carers on the letter below.
Kind regards,
Miss E. Randall.

Dear Parents/Carers,
We are delighted to inform you that at Weddington, we have subscribed to a scheme called ‘Spelling Shed’. Spelling Shed is an exciting scheme which aligns with the English National Curriculum for spellings, and allows children to learn them in a fun and exciting way by playing a range of games.
Your child will receive a log-on so that they can access Spelling Shed from home. Their log-on details will include their name, username and password. You can download Spelling Shed as an app but it does cost, so you may wish to consider using the website link as this is free. You will find the website link on your child’s log-on.
How will Spelling Shed work for my child?
- Each week, on a Monday, your child’s class teacher will set your child an assignment.
-The assignment will involve the children logging onto Spelling Shed and practising their assigned spellings, which will be visible on the screen.
- The children should click on ‘view assignment,’ ‘play’ and then ‘play’ again where it says ‘practise your spellings and build your shed score.’
-There are four levels on the practice game and the children should choose the level they think is the most challenging or work their way through to extreme.
-There are two additional games to choose from, ‘Bee Keeper’ and ‘Buzz Words’ which the children can play once they have completed their assignment. These will not be visible until the children have completed their assignment.
- Each child will have an ‘Avatar’ when they log in, which they can personalise. Additional purchases and upgrades can be made using points/honey pots that they have earned from practising their spellings.
- The children can earn points and ‘Honeypots’ by spelling words correctly, speed accuracy and by completing more challenging levels on their practice game.
- You will be able to see a ‘Shed Score’ which is the total of scores for the past rolling 7-day period. Your child’s Shed Score may go down and up each week – this is totally fine as it is dependent on how accurately your child has spelt words in the past 7 days.
If you don’t have online access at home for your child to play Spelling Shed, then your child’s class teacher will be able to send a paper spelling homework home each week. However, if you do have access to a computer or device, we would like the children to practise their spellings through Spelling Shed. Teachers will be able to track how children are getting on with their spelling practice.
We are so excited to begin using Spelling Shed to help improve spellings across the school, and hope that the children will also be excited about learning their spellings in fun and engaging ways. The children will still be tested in school on a Friday and will bring home a spelling list so that you can see what the weekly spellings are.
Please note that to use Spelling Shed, we have only input the children’s first name (surname initial where required) and class which is covered by the GDPR regulations under the EEA.
Yours sincerely,
Miss E Randall
