Year One have had a great start into the New Academic Year. Mrs. Doyle and Miss Humphries are delighted with how they have adapted to the transition from Reception into Year One!
Our Topic this term is ’Once Upon a Time'. We will be reading and learning about The Three Little Pigs, Thumbelina and The Princess and the Pea. We are excited to see Our what other twisted tales might come along next term. Maybe The Big Bad Wolf isn't so bad after all... We will just have to wait and see!
We will also be working on our place value in Maths. After our October break, we will begin our Addition and Subtraction block of learning, with lots of exciting ways of working out our number sentences and recognising the symbols.
Our Topic for Spring term is 'There's a Commotion in the Ocean and a Rumble in the Jungle'.
In Maths, we will be continuing with the White Rose scheme to further explore place value and addition and subtraction. We will also be looking forward to learning about measurement when we will get a chance to use scales for weighing and use rulers for measuring length and height.
We will also continue our RWInc programme to further develop and practice our reading skills.
In Geography and Science, we will learn all about our wonderful planet, from the deepest oceans to the tallest mountains.
Homework and Spellings
Year 1 children will take home two pieces of homework every Friday. The first piece will have a Maths focus based on what we have covered in school that week. The second piece of homework will be a spelling/handwriting sheet. These words will be tested in a written spelling test in school the following Friday. We recommend that spellings are practiced every day, you can find a list of spelling ideas and games below.
Children will also take home a new reading book every Friday. This book will correspond with their RWI group/level in school. Children are encouraged to read for 10 minutes every day. Reading can be recorded in their red reading logs. Children in KS1 take part in a reading challenge; Read the Rainbow. Children can read books from both home and school.
Homework and reading books should be returned to school every Wednesday.
PE for Year 1 will take place every Tuesday and Thursday. Children can come to school wearing their full PE kit (dark joggers or shorts, white t-shirt, and dark hoody, zipped jacket or blue school jumper).
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
