Year One have had a great start into the New Academic Year. Mrs Minchinton and Mrs Owen are delighted with how they have adapted to the transition from Reception into Year One!
Our Theme ‘Happy Holidays and Awesome Adventures’ has taken off into lots of excitement, Reading and finding out about the adventures that the Bog Baby has. We have also been little research scientists; learning all about different kinds of animals and the sort of foods that they eat.
Our next adventure is to create a creature of our own which we will draw and describe its special features.
We have been working really hard on our place value in Maths and are just about to begin our Addition and Subtraction block of learning, with lots of exciting ways of working out our number sentences and recognising the symbols.
In the second half of the Autumn Term Year 1 have been really busy learners.
In theme, we looked at celebrations and events including Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day and Christmas. In the run up to Christmas, the children wrote letters to Santa and sang beautifully for the ‘Carols Around The Tree’ concert. They also made cards as part of our Caring Christmas campaign which were sent out to elderly or lonely people in our local community.
In maths we continued to learn about addition and subtraction (within 10) and also looked at place value for numbers up to 20. We have worked hard to represent numbers in different ways including part-part-whole, bar models and using dienes. We also spent time learning about shape and properties of both 2D and 3D shapes.
Science this half term has been focused on changes in the season. We went on an Autumnal walk, looking for and gathering evidence about the season. We learnt about the different seasons (and weathers) throughout the year and how they impact on us and animals too.
In Year 1, we are are encouraging our children to read - children are taking it in turns to choose a book from home to share with the class. Some have chosen to read it themselves while others are enjoying hearing their teachers read it to the class.
They really are loving it :-)
