Summer Term
This term we will be doing lots of exciting activities. For the first half-term we will be 'Going All Around the World'. We will be learning about different countries - France, Australia and Africa. We will be learning about the geography of the countries, traditions, food they eat (including taste testing some of the food) and will be learning some French. We are excited to be holding a French afternoon for our parent/carers where they will be in for a treat from the children and will also be joining the children in eating croissants to finish off our topic of France.
During this term we are also excited to be having visitors come into school to carry out weekly balance bike activities. The children will be taking part in sessions on a Monday morning. This will help with many areas of of curriculum - listening skills, physical activity, personal, social and emotional development and spatial awareness.
We will also be learning about 'People Who Help Us' this term. We are hoping to invite guests into Reception to talk about their roles in society. We will be learning about the Police, Nurses/Doctors, Dentists, the Fire Service to name but a few.
Please remember to send in your child's reading book each day in order that we can share their book with them throughout the week.
We will also be going on a school trip to Ashend Farm in July, which will be very exciting for the children.
Please continue to share your child's homework on Tapestry so that we can see the amazing work you are doing with your children at home. Your continued support is much appreciated.
The children have been creating some amazing models of the Sydney Opera House for homework. They used different media and became very creative. In class we also made boomerangs and didgeridoos after learning about Aboriginal art.

Spring Term
We have been learning about lots of exciting things during the Spring Term. We carried out lots of activities during our Dinosaur topic. The children became palaeontologists and made dinosaur fossils using salt dough. The children thoroughly enjoyed making the fossils. Children also made a fact file about a chosen dinosaur by researching - How they moved. What colour it was. What did it sound like. Some children also made a 3D model of a dinosaur. We saw lots of exciting models that children created for their homework. Children also carried out a scientific experiment during our dinosaur topic. They used different materials to try and melt dinosaur eggs. The children used salt, sugar, heat and hot water to attempt to melt the eggs.
During this term we also celebrated Chinese New Year. We discovered how Chinese New Year is celebrated and we tasted a variety of Chinese food. We took part in a dragon dance and worked in small groups dancing to Chinese music. We made and decorated lanterns to celebrate the fesitval. We made red envelopes with chocolate coins in as we discovered that during Chinese New Year small red envelopes are given with a coin inside as a gift to celebrate.
We also celebrated Valentine's Day learning about how the day originated. We did lots of maths during this week, matching capital letters to lower case letters and making cards.
In Spring 2 our topic has been Growing. We have been learning about lifecycles and have been reading The Tadpole's Promise, The Bad Tempered Ladybird and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We have been observing frogs spawn in the classroom and noting the changes. We have been experimenting with floating and sinking. We have also been planting sunflowers and keeping a sunflower diary recording the growth of our sunflowers.
We had a fantastic day celebrating Red Nose Day. We dressed up in Super Hero costumes and discovered why we take part in the day. Children made a donation to the charity.

This half-term we have been looking at festivals. We have had a fantastic time celebrating Diwali. We listened to the story of Rama and Sita, then we retold the story using our own words. We looked at Diwali songs and poems. We tasted some different foods this week which are eaten during the Diwali festival. We designed our own Mehndi patterns and created some amazing Rangoli patterns using a range of different materials. We really enjoyed making Diva lamps for Diwali. We moulded the clay and used different coloured sequins to decorate our lamps. During the week of Diwali we also celebrated Bonfire Night. We created our own firework pictures using paint and glitter.
We have been doing lots of work on Remembrance Day. We listened to the poem of Flanders Field and discussed the reason we wear poppies and the meaning of Remembrance. We created some amazing artwork by making poppies. We took part in a 2-minute silence on Remembrance Day at 11 am and discussed why we do this.

To help with our fine motor skills we have been making spider webs by threading wool through the holes on paper plates. On Friday we had a dress-up day and all came as a Nursery Rhyme character.
