Autumn Term
We would like to welcome our new children and their families to our Reception. We would like to inform you of our wonderful Reception Team. Mrs King and Mrs Lane - Class Teachers, Miss Moore, Miss Sweet, Miss Cattell and Mrs Lakin, Mrs Bradshaw, Mrs Evans and Mrs Evers - Teaching Assistants. We are currently getting to know the children and finding out about what they enjoy doing. We have lots of exciting activities this half-term. We have read the Colour Monster and talked about our feelings and how our actions affect other people. Other books we have been reading are Peace at Last and The Scarecrow's Wedding. Daily we are doing many physical activities daily including Busy Feet and the Mile Walk and a weekly session of Rugbytots. During the term we will be carrying out lots of cooking activities to help with maths, physical development and communication and language development. We look forward to keeping you updated of our learning through the weekly Learning Letter and our online communication tool - Tapestry.
Homework
Homework will be sent out every Friday, along with our weekly learning letter letting you know what the childrens learning focus is each week. You can take photos of the homework activities and upload them as observations onto Tapestry. We will look forward to seeing their work. This needs to be completed by the following Wednesday.
Reading Books
Your child will bring home a new reading book for you to share each Friday. Can you please record when you have read with your child in their red reading diary along with any observations. The reading folder needs to be kept in their book bags so that we can read with the children at any opportunity. The books will be collected in on a Wednesday and changed ready for the new book to come home each Friday.
Rugbytots
RKL children will be doing Rugbytots each Tuesday and will need to come into school in their PE kits. RSK children's Rugbytots session will be every Thursday afternoon, so will need to come in their PE kits that day.
Our Visit to St James Church
On Tuesday 11th October Reception walked to St James Church. Reverend Adrian Guthrie conducted a Scarecrow's Wedding as we have been reading the book The Scarecrow's Wedding by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. We had a fantastic time. We had a wedding party - bride, groom, bridesmaids, page boys and a father of the bride to give her away. Betty O'Barley and Harry O'Hay the characters in the story had the most amazing wedding. It was a most incredible trip.

During this half-term we will be looking at Celebrations, Light and Dark, Nursery Rhyme Week and doing lots of work on our Nativity in December - Baarmy Bethlehem.
THRIVE CHALLENGE FOR NOVEMBER
In RSK we have completed the Thrive Challenge for November. We have placed our targets, aspirations and wishes, that we would like to achieve by the end of the school year, into a jar. We have come up with some excellet targets including:-
"I want to get better at writing".
"I want to make more friends".
"I want to get better at maths".
We will look at the targets at the end of the year to see how well we have worked on our targets.
In Reception in the Spring Term we have been learning all about Traditional Tales. The stories we have been focussing on are The Gingerbread Man, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Mr Wolf's Pancackes, One Snowy Night, The Elves and the Shoe Maker and also Chinese New Year.
We have been doing lots of exciting cooking activities including making and tasting pancackes with different toppings and we really enjoyed celebrating Chinese New Year and tasting lots of scrumptious Chinese food including - prawn toast, prawn crackers and spring rolls - yummy!
We have been learning about Growing. We planted sunflower seeds, bean stalks and did lots of work on Jack and the Beanstalk. We were very excited when we went on a visit to Ash End Farm. We saw lots of exciting animals and fed the chicks, goats and were lucky enought to experience tiny chicks. We also chose an egg from the egg house and took it home. We had the most enjoyable day.
We will be learning lots of fun facts about the countries of Kenya, Italy, France and Brazil as well as learning about the city of London during the week of the King's coronation.
We enjoyed reading the story of Handa's Surprise which is set in Kenya. We enjoyed acting out and writing about the story and comparing Kenya to where we live. We learnt about and painted the African animals in the story and did careful observational drawings of the fruit. We really enjoyed making our own delicious, healthy fruit kebabs! :-)
We enjoyed reading and writing about the story of Naughty Bus which is set in London. In small groups we drew story maps. We enjoyed learning about the famous landmarks in London and building some of them out of construction. We also learnt about the King's coronation and made flags and crowns which we wore to our lovely picnic on the school field.
France
We had a wonderful time learning about the countries of France and Italy. We enjoyed tasting some French food and making our own yummy pizzas.
Brazil
We had a fantastic time learning all about Brazil. We had a carnival, did some Samba dancing and made carnival masks and rhythm sticks!
Summer Term 2
People Who Help Us
The children have enjoyed learning about the jobs of People Who Help Us. We have looked at the roles of postal workers and read the Jolly Postman story, looked at the role of the dentist and how to care for our teeth, the role of firefighters and safety in the home, the role of doctors, nurses and paramedics and the role of the police and had a wonderful visit from a police officer. We have also thought about what we would like to be when we grow up and have done lots of transition work ready for Year One.
