We love English here at Weddington Primary School and we strive to instil our pupils with a love for language, reading and writing. Consequently, our aim is to deliver a high-quality English education which inspires all pupils to become confident members of society, allowing them to communicate their ideas both formally and informally throughout life. We strongly believe that the teaching of high-quality language, along with modelled writing, will enable our children to speak and write fluently. We believe that through reading a variety of texts children will have the opportunity to develop emotionally, socially and culturally. We intend for the skills taught in English to be applied across all areas of the curriculum.
We intend that children at Weddington should be able to read easily, fluently and with good understanding. They will acquire the skills to achieve this by: blending, using a structured phonics scheme (Read, Write, Inc) to decode and build words; retrieving information from text; making inferences and predictions; summarising key points and comparing and contrasting text content. As a result, the children should gain a wide range of vocabulary and be able to express their thoughts and opinions about texts they have read. We also expect the children to develop a good understanding of grammar skills and apply spelling patterns to their work. The children will learn to write clearly, accurately and coherently, enjoying the writing process of planning, drafting and editing, by experiencing a range of fiction and non-fiction genres, for a range of purposes and audiences. We aim for the children to be confident communicators and use partner work and discussion in order to share ideas and learn from one another. Children will learn how to use continuous cursive handwriting, developing their own individual style, and use this effectively by the time they leave Year 6.
Through this subject, how will the children explore the Pathway of Possibilities to visit The Seven Wonders Of Weddy?
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
