Welcome to Year 3

Homework: 

Year 3 will receive a ‘Homework Choice Menu’ filled with fun, creative activities linked to this term’s curriculum topic – Pirates and the Stone Age. It’s a free choice menu, and the children are expected to complete at least 3 activities over each half term, with the option to do more if they wish.

It would be wonderfully beneficial if your children could also access Spelling Shed and Times Table Rockstars (TTRS). Ideally, children should play at least 10 games of TTRS and Spelling Shed each week to support with fluency.

Spellings: 

The children in Year 3 have been split into 2 spelling groups. It is essential that we rebuild the children’s confidence with certain spelling patterns and sounds before moving onto to more trickier spellings. This will be reassessed at the end of Spring term.

Spellings will be introduced on Monday and tested on a Friday. 
All children have access to Spelling Shed which is a valuable online tool. Children should be accessing this at home via their log on and playing minimum 5 – 10 mins per day to really embed the sounds and spelling patterns. In turn, this will help with long term memory and increase their weekly spelling scores. 

P.E:

Children are to come to school in their P.E kits on their designated days with the exception of Bussell class who will wear uniform when they attend swimming lessons. Please ensure that your child comes appropriately dressed following our school PE dress code.

Monday – Swimming – Bussell Class - PINGLES

Monday – Indoor P.E - Ennis  Class

Tuesday - All classes outdoor PE.

Bussell swimming sessions will be held at Pingles Leisure Centre and will be delivered by qualified instructors in ability groups. Children will travel by coach. All information has been sent out to parents.

Reading: 

By the end of the first full week of term, every child will receive a colour-banded reading book. We have invested in a wide range of exciting new books for all reading abilities, designed to inspire a lifelong love of reading.

In Year 3, children are expected to read with a parent, carer or guardian at least four times each week. Each reading session should be recorded and signed in their reading record.

Please refer to your child’s reading record for helpful guidance and examples of questions you could ask about the text they are reading.

Reading books and records should be brought to school every day in their plastic wallets as part of the children’s essential school equipment. They will be checked and signed by a member of staff every Thursday.

Year 3 - What we're learning

Autumn Term

Year 3 blasted off into the new academic year with our spectacular ‘Beyond Earth’ Space Theme Week! Throughout the week, the children journeyed into the fascinating depths of our galaxy through lessons bursting with scientific discovery, creativity and imagination. The highlight was an unforgettable visit to our immersive planetarium, where the children gazed in wonder at constellations, explored neighbouring planets and discovered more about our incredible Solar System. Their excited “oohs”, “aahs” and “wows” truly captured their curiosity and thirst for knowledge. What a remarkable start to Year 3! 

 

The adventures will continue throughout the Autumn Term. In English, we will embark upon prehistoric journeys with Gigantosaurus, set sail on a swashbuckling adventure with The Pirate Cruncher and travel thousands of years into the past with Stone Age Boy. Alongside these inspiring texts, the children will encounter a rich variety of books during our whole-class reading sessions, developing their fluency, vocabulary and confidence when discussing what they have read. 

Our learning will be enriched through Geography as we dive beneath the waves to uncover the mysteries of the world’s oceans. In History, we will become courageous investigators, travelling back through time to discover how life changed from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. The children will explore evidence, ask thoughtful questions and reflect upon how the lives of early humans compare with our own. 

Creativity will flow through our Art and Design and Technology lessons. Inspired by the remarkable work of Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, the children will experiment with a range of artistic techniques to create their own imaginative outcomes. They will also continue developing their sewing skills, demonstrating perseverance, precision and pride as they design and create their own Christmas decoration. 

Back in the modern world, Computing will prepare the children for life as confident Weddy Graduates by strengthening their typing skills and introducing them to email communication. In French, they will take their exciting first steps towards learning a new language, developing the confidence and courage to listen, speak and respond using unfamiliar words and phrases. 

Our budding scientists will investigate the remarkable power of forces before deepening their understanding of light through practical exploration and enquiry. They will be encouraged to think scientifically, make predictions, investigate ideas and reflect carefully upon their findings. 

There will also be plenty of opportunities to stay active and develop teamwork. In PE, the children will build their coordination, control and tactical awareness through handball and football. Bussell Class will make a splash during swimming lessons at the Pingles Leisure Centre, developing an essential life skill, while Ennis Class will explore gymnastics through a sequence of leaps, balances and rolls. 

In RE, the children will explore the importance of nature and the changing seasons across a range of religions and worldviews, including reflecting upon their own beliefs and experiences. Our PSHE learning will focus on Families and Relationships and Health and Wellbeing, helping every child to develop respectful relationships, recognise the importance of healthy choices and value what makes each person unique. As part of our community outreach programme, Year 3 will also visit The Chines Community Care Home to spread festive joy by performing a wonderful selection of traditional and modern Christmas carols for the residents, demonstrating confidence, kindness and respect within our local community. 

It promises to be an action-packed Autumn Term filled with adventure, creativity and discovery. Through every experience, we will encourage our children to be Curious, Courageous and Confident, while demonstrating the values of perseverance, inspiration, aspiration, respect and reflection. We cannot wait to see where our learning takes us!
