PE

Children are to come to school in their P.E kits on their designated days. Please ensure that your child comes appropriately dressed following school PE dress code.

Reading

Children have all been issued with a colour banded reading book and they have been encouraged to also pick a free reading book from either the classroom, library or home to really instil that love and passion for reading.  

The Year 5 expectation is for you to read with your child minimum of 5 times per week and record it in their reading record.  A parent, carer or guardian signature will be required for each read.  

Please refer to the reading records for guidance and examples on possible questions that you could ask your child about the text which they are reading.  

Reading logs and reading books are expected to be in school every day as part of school equipment. 

Spelling

The children in Year 5 have been split into 2 spelling groups. It is essential that we rebuild the children’s confidence with certain spelling patterns and sounds before moving onto to more trickier spellings. This will be reassessed at the end of Spring term. 

Spellings will be introduced on Monday and tested on a Friday.  
All children have access to Spelling Shed which is a valuable online tool. Children should be accessing this at home via their log on and playing minimum 5 – 10 mins per day to really embed the sounds and spelling patterns. In turn, this will help with long term memory and increase their weekly spelling scores.  

Homework

Year 5 will receive a ‘Homework Choice Menu’ filled with fun, creative activities linked to this term’s curriculum topic –Ancient Greece. It’s a free choice menu, and the children are expected to complete at least 3 activities over each half term, with the option to do more if they wish.  

It would be wonderfully beneficial if your children could also access Spelling Shed and Times Table Rockstars (TTRS). Ideally, children should play at least 10 games of TTRS and Spelling Shed each week to support with fluency.

Year 5 - What we're learning

Autumn Term

The Autumn term in Year 5 is set to be full of curiosity, creativity and discovery, with children encouraged to become increasingly confident and independent learners. Through an exciting range of topics and experiences, children will make connections between subjects, develop their understanding of the world around them and be encouraged to ask questions, challenge themselves and think deeply. 

In English, we will step into the fascinating world of Greek mythology, exploring the powerful gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece. Children will develop their understanding of the legendary hero Odysseus, using his adventures as inspiration for their own writing. Alongside this, they will develop their grammatical knowledge by exploring direct speech, modal verbs and dashes, applying these skills within their writing to create engaging and imaginative pieces. 

In Maths, children will continue to build their fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. They will explore place value to one million, developing confidence when reading, ordering and comparing larger numbers. This will be followed by addition and subtraction up to four-digits, multiplication and division and fractions, with opportunities for children to apply their mathematical knowledge to practical and problem-solving situations. 

Our wider curriculum will allow children to explore both the past and the world around them. In Geography, children will investigate Greece, developing their map skills by reading, interpreting and comparing physical and political maps. In History, we will travel back in time to explore the Ancient Greeks, asking who they were, when and where they lived and what life was like for different people. Children will consider the lasting influence of Ancient Greece and discover how aspects of Ancient Greek life continue to shape the modern world. 

In Science, children will become materials investigators, exploring the properties of materials and how materials change. They will investigate reversible and irreversible changes, using practical experiments to develop their scientific enquiry skills. Their learning will be put to a real-life purpose as they become scientists helping to prepare for a food festival, investigating changes that happen when food and other materials are heated, cooled, mixed or altered. 

Creativity will continue to flourish through Art, where children will explore the exciting technique of pointillism. They will study and compare the work of Georges Seurat and Roy Lichtenstein, considering how artists use colour, dots and pattern in different ways. Children will then use these ideas to create their own artwork, developing their confidence with colour, composition and artistic expression. 

In Design and Technology, children will develop their practical skills through sewing, designing and creating their own nativity characters. They will learn to work carefully with materials, developing their ability to plan, make and evaluate their creations while building confidence in using a range of sewing techniques. 

In Computing, children will develop their understanding of online safety, learning how to use technology responsibly and recognise potential risks when using the internet. They will also develop their coding skills, using logical thinking and problem-solving to create and debug simple programmes. 

Our PSHE learning will focus on relationships, stereotypes and taking care of ourselves. Children will explore what makes positive and respectful relationships, challenge stereotypes and consider how their choices can affect their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. This will link closely with PE, where children will explore health and wellbeing, learning about the importance of staying active and looking after their bodies. They will also develop their teamwork, communication and coordination through outdoor ball games. 

In RE, children will explore how people show and express their beliefs, considering the different ways that faith and belief can be represented in everyday life. They will explore how different communities celebrate their beliefs, encouraging respect, curiosity and understanding towards the experiences of others. 

Through Music, children will explore how music has the power to bring people together, with a particular focus on rock music. They will listen to, perform and respond to different styles of music, developing their understanding of rhythm, melody and musical expression. 

In French, children will develop their understanding and pronunciation of key French phonemes, while exploring vocabulary linked to family life. They will build confidence in speaking and listening, developing their ability to communicate simple ideas and sentences in French. 

As always, we will continue to promote our core values of respect, reflection, aspiration and curiosity, encouraging children to ask questions, embrace new challenges and take pride in their achievements. The Autumn term will provide Year 5 with opportunities to explore the past, understand the world around them and develop confidence, creativity and independence.
