Year 3

Welcome to Year 3

Homework:

Year 3 will receive a ‘Homework Choice Menu’ filled with fun, creative activities linked to this term’s curriculum topic – Amazing Africa and Curios Castles. It’s a free choice menu, and the children are expected to complete at least 3 activities over each half term, with the option to do more if they wish.

It would be wonderfully beneficial if your children could also access Spelling Shed and Times Table Rockstars (TTRS). Ideally, children should play at least 10 games of TTRS and Spelling Shed each week to support with fluency. Logins for Spelling Shed and TTRS can be found in your child's Reading Records.

Spellings

The children in Year 3 have been split into 2 spelling groups. It is essential that we rebuild the children’s confidence with certain spelling patterns and sounds before moving onto to more trickier spellings. This will be reassessed at the end of Spring term.

Spellings will be introduced on Monday and tested on a Friday.
All children have access to Spelling Shed which is a valuable online tool. Children should be accessing this at home via their log on and playing minimum 5 – 10 mins per day to really embed the sounds and spelling patterns. In turn, this will help with long term memory and increase their weekly spelling scores.

P.E:

Children are to come to school in their P.E kits on their designated days. Please ensure that your child comes appropriately dressed following school PE dress code.

Monday Outdoors

Tuesday Swimming - Ennis

Friday Swimming - Rowling

Friday Indoor - Bussell

Rowling and Ennis class’s last swimming lessons will be on W.B. 9th February 2026.

Bussell class will begin swimming lessons on 27th February 2026 and will continue lessons to the end of the academic year.

Sessions will be held at Atherstone Leisure centre and delivered by qualified instructors in ability groups. Children will travel by coach.

Reading:

Children have all been issued with a colour banded reading book and they have been encouraged to also pick a free reading book from either the classroom, library or home to really instil that love and passion for reading.

The Year 3 expectation is for you to read with your child minimum of 5 times per week and record it in their reading record.  A parent, carer or guardian signature will be required for each read.

Please refer to the reading records for guidance and examples on possible questions that you could ask your child about the text which they are reading.

Reading logs and reading books are expected to be in school every day as part of school equipment and will be checked and signed by school every Thursday.

Spring Term

Spring term is set to be full of adventure, imagination and discovery, with lots of opportunities for children to creatively learn and explore our exciting themes: Amazing Africa and Curious Castles!

In English, we will step into the world of traditional tales, including the much-loved Little Red Riding Hood. Children will bring stories to life by writing rich setting descriptions, creating persuasive letters for the Big Bad Wolf, and imagining their own alternative endings to familiar tales. Alongside this, we will continue to enjoy a wide range of texts during our whole-class reading sessions, including Wild Robot and Call Me Lion. In Maths, Year 3 will strengthen their skills as they complete the second block of multiplication and division, before moving on to length and perimeter, fractions, and mass and capacity, alongside regular times tables practice to improve fluency.

Our science learning will focus on animals including humans, where children will discover the important roles of the human skeleton and muscles, helping them to understand how their bodies move and stay healthy. Linking closely to our topic, geography will take us on a journey to Tanzania, where we will explore the country in depth and compare it to life in the UK, developing our understanding of the wider world. Back in the present, our PE lessons will keep us active and energised. Children will enjoy basketball and tennis outdoors, while indoor sessions will focus on fitness and gymnastics, building strength, coordination and confidence.

Autumn Term

Year 3 certainly started the year with a bang during our Greatest Showman theme week! Throughout the week, children were whisked away into a world of circus fun, with lessons full of creativity and imagination, before finishing with an unforgettable surprise inside a real big top circus!

In Autumn term, Year 3 are set for even more thrilling learning adventures. In English, we will go on incredible journeys with Gigantosaurus, set sail with The Pirate Cruncher, and step into the past with Stone Age Boy. Alongside this, we will explore a wide variety of books together in our whole-class reading sessions. These lessons will be supported by our Geography, where we will dive deep beneath the waves to uncover the secrets of our oceans, and our History, where we will be transported back thousands of years to discover what life was like in the Stone Age. In Art and DT, we will get hands-on and creative, experimenting with different skills and techniques to produce imaginative work linked to our topics. This will include looking closely at the Japanese artist, Hokusai, and further embedding their sewing skills.

Back in the present, our Computing lessons will prepare us for life as Weddy Graduates by sharpening our typing and email skills, while in French we will take our very first steps into learning a brand-new language. Even more excitement awaits in Science, where we will explore the power of forces and deepen our understanding of light. To keep us active, our PE lessons will help us master the skills of handball and continue to grow as footballers. Rowling and Ennis Class will also make a splash in their swimming lessons, while Bussell Class will develop their gymnastics skills.

In RE, children will be exploring the importance of the seasons and nature for a range of religions and worldviews, including their own. Further to this, there will be a focus on Families and Relationships, and Health and Wellbeing in PSHE.

It’s going to be a jam-packed Autumn term, full of curiosity, creativity and discovery!
