P.E.
Children are to come to school in their P.E kits on their designated days. Please ensure that your child comes appropriately dressed following school PE dress code.
Monday – Outdoor
Thursday - Indoor
Reading:
Children have all been issued with a colour banded reading book and we would also encourage children to read a range of books from either the classroom, library or home to really instil that love and passion for reading.
The Year 1 expectation is for you to read with your child minimum of 3 times per week and record it in their reading record. A parent, carer or guardian signature will be required for each read.
Please refer to the reading records for guidance and examples on possible questions that you could ask your child about the text which they are reading.
Reading logs and reading books are expected to be in school every day as part of school equipment and will be checked and signed by school every Wednesday.
Spellings:
Spellings will be introduced on Monday and tested on a Friday.
All children have access to Spelling Shed which is a valuable online tool. Children should be accessing this at home via their log on and playing minimum 5 – 10 mins per day to really embed the sounds and spelling patterns. In turn, this will help with long term memory and increase their weekly spelling scores.
Homework:
Year 1 will receive a ‘Homework Choice Menu’ filled with fun, creative activities linked to this term’s curriculum topic – Oceans and Jungles. It’s a free choice menu, and the children are expected to complete at least 3 activities over each half term, with the option to do more if they wish.
It would be wonderfully beneficial if your children could also access Spelling Shed. Logins for Spelling Shed can be found in your child's Reading Records.

Thank you for your support,
Year 1 Team 😊

Please note, this page will be updated termly, so please keep checking back.
Spring term is set to be full of adventure, imagination and discovery, with lots of opportunities for children to creatively learn and explore our exciting themes: Oceans and Jungles.
This term in English, Year 1 are exploring oceans and jungles using some wonderful stories! We will be diving beneath the waves with ‘The Search for the Giant Arctic Jellyfish’ and ‘The Snail and the Whale’, exploring icy oceans and discovering how characters solve problems and work together. Our jungle adventures continue with ‘There’s a Tiger in the Garden’, where we will think about imagination and believing in the impossible. Finally, in ‘Tin Forest’, we will explore themes of hope, change and caring for our world. Throughout the term, we will be practising our reading skills and building fluency; learning new vocabulary linked to oceans and jungles; writing exciting adjective-filled descriptions and fascinating fact files; exploring characters’ feelings and story settings; and developing our spelling, handwriting and sentence writing.
This term in Maths, our Year 1 children will be building their confidence and understanding of numbers beyond 20. We will begin by exploring numbers between 20 and 50 - learning to recognise them, understand their value, estimate where they belong on a number line, and sort them in different ways. The children will develop their understanding of tens and ones, helping them to see how numbers are made and how they relate to one another. Later in the term, we will move on to measurement. The children will begin measuring length using centimetres (cm) and will practise comparing and ordering objects by size. We will also explore weight and capacity, using practical activities to understand concepts such as heavier and lighter, and full and empty.
Our science learning will focus on animals including humans, where we will be learning all about animals and their characteristics in order to group them. We will also be getting outside to spot the first signs of Spring and begin learning about plants and trees. Linking closely to our topic, geography will take us on a journey to around the UK, where we will explore the four countries that make up the UK as well as their capital cities, developing our understanding of where we live. In History this term, we will be learning all about some significant people from the past, including Florence Nightingale, and discovering how their work changed how we live today. Back in the present, our PE lessons will keep us active and energised. Children will enjoy tennis and orienteering outdoors, while indoor sessions will focus on dodgeball and dance, building strength, coordination and confidence.
