Welcome to Year 4

PE

Children are to come to school in their P.E kits on their designated days. Please ensure that your child comes appropriately dressed following school PE dress code.

Reading

Children have all been issued with a colour banded reading book and they have been encouraged to also pick a free reading book from either the classroom, library or home to really instil that love and passion for reading.

The Year 4 expectation is for you to read with your child minimum of 5 times per week and record it in their reading record.  A parent, carer or guardian signature will be required for each read.

Please refer to the reading records for guidance and examples on possible questions that you could ask your child about the text which they are reading.

Reading logs and reading books are expected to be in school every day as part of school equipment and will be checked and signed by school every Friday.

Spelling

The children in Year 4 have been split into 2 spelling groups. It is essential that we rebuild the children’s confidence with certain spelling patterns and sounds before moving onto to more trickier spellings. This will be reassessed at the end of Spring term.

Spellings will be introduced on Monday and tested on a Friday. 
All children have access to Spelling Shed which is a valuable online tool. Children should be accessing this at home via their log on and playing minimum 5 – 10 mins per day to really embed the sounds and spelling patterns. In turn, this will help with long term memory and increase their weekly spelling scores. 

Homework

Year 4 will receive a ‘Homework Choice Menu’ filled with fun, creative activities linked to this term’s curriculum topic –Out the window and trade and transport. It’s a free choice menu, and the children are expected to complete at least 3 activities over each half term, with the option to do more if they wish.

Year 4 are encouraged to practise their times tables regularly at home in preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check in June. Using Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) is a fun and effective way to build speed, accuracy and confidence, so please make this part of your daily routine to help your child feel fully prepared.

Autumn Term

We have an exciting and action-packed Autumn Term ahead in Year 4, filled with mysterious forests, marvellous stories, local adventures and creative discoveries! In English, we will be stepping into the extraordinary world of Roald Dahl’s Billy and the Minpins, following Billy as he ventures into the mysterious Forest of Sin and using the story to inspire our own sensational writing. We will develop our writing skills by using ambitious vocabulary, expanded noun phrases, subordinating conjunctions and fronted adverbials to create fabulous descriptions of the forest and the monsters lurking within. In Whole Class Reading, our Roald Dahl adventure continues as we dive into the wonderfully wicked world of The Witches, before later exploring the much-loved story of Paddington. Our Reading Dogs will help us develop our retrieval, vocabulary, prediction, summarising and inference skills as we uncover clues and explore these fantastic texts. In Geography, we will be looking Through the Window and becoming young geographers as we investigate our school and local area, using maps, compass directions and fieldwork skills to create maps of our own and identify the human and physical features around us. Our local environment will also inspire our Science learning as we investigate living things and their habitats, explore the characteristics of living things, discover how plants and animals are adapted to their habitats and learn how scientists group and classify them. Finally, in Art, we will be going dotty as we step into the colourful and imaginative world of Yayoi Kusama, exploring her famous use of polka dots, bold colours, patterns and repetition before experimenting with different techniques and creating our own Kusama-inspired masterpieces. It promises to be a busy, creative and inspiring Autumn Term, and we cannot wait to see where our learning takes us!
